The new Pudong (“river eastside”) development along the Huangpu river presents a highly futuristic face. The prominent tower in the foreground is the Dong Fang Ming Zhu (Orient Pearl Tower). The tower stands 468 meters high. Within the tower are observation decks, a hotel, various exhibits and a television station. The view from the tower is of Puxi (“river westside”) and the early European style buildings along the famous stretch called the Bund. The tall single skyscraper in the background is the Jin Mao Building, which is actually taller than the Orient Pearl Tower. The Jin Mao Building has a bar at floors 85 through 87 and a Hyatt Hotel from around floor 55 to 84. Highly impressive Pudong is well on track to supplant Hong Kong as the financial center of Asia. The area is a must see when in Shanghai.
