A section of the Great Wall of China (Chang Cheng) outside of Beijing, China’s capital. Construction of the 6350-kilometer long wall started in the 7th century B.C. to help thwart what were frequent invasions by peoples of the north. The initial phases of construction were completed during Qin Dynasty rule around 200 B.C. although additions to the wall continued through Ming Dynasty rule in the 1600’s A.D.
