This wall complete with a portrait of Mao Zedong is opposite Tiananmen Square and holds the entrance to the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City (Imperial Palace) was built in the 1400’s and used by both Ming and Qing Dynasty emperors as their principle residence. The city was “forbidden” since only the emperor, his wives and eunuch assistants could enter. His wives generally numbered in the hundreds and eunuchs were men who had been, well, “fixed”. Ouch! Guarding the entrance in disciplined form is a PLA (People’s Liberation Army) Soldier.
