Compare our incubator program to all other China entry alternatives and you will soon realize the cost and performance advantages it offers.
How much does it cost and how long will it take to setup our own legal entity in China? To establish a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE) operation expect to invest $200,000 or more to cover Chinese capital, legal counsel, government, travel, time and inefficiency costs. The time to setup will be 10 to 12 months minimum. Monthly overhead for a 3 to 5 person office will run from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on who is hired and where you decide to locate. Finally, do not forget the ongoing cost of supporting and managing the operation from your headquarters, something not easy to do given your limited experience in China.
Aside from investment, what is the downside of going-it-alone? The downside is the potential impact going-it-alone could have on your upside. Big companies have spent significant money and time to become profitable or cease operations in China. With the right people, sufficient money, good business model and ample patience, success is possible. Realistically, there are many variables that must come together to achieve positive results. Understanding and properly managing these variables is at best extremely difficult.
Can we just sign up a local agent or distributor to manage our China sales? You can but then, it really is not your business. Agents and distributors focus on their business and drive sales according personal business motives. If your product is easy to sell, they will sell it. Otherwise, they will sell easier to sell products to earn their commissions. In addition, agents and distributors in China often do not communicate well and become misaligned with your objectives. This could lead to serious issues and lost time. If you plan to be in China long-term, it is best to build and drive your own business.
Can we participate in the China Business Incubator if I have a non-sales business? Our CBI program is ideal for a variety of businesses. For example, our CBI works well for companies that have full-time sourcing support needs in China. Through our CBI we can find and qualify suppliers, coordinate with factories, ensure products meet specifications and perform pre-shipment inspections to name a few. As another example, if you simply require representation in China but find it cost-ineffective to do yourself, our CBI could be a good solution.
