CHINESE ASTROLOGY

Records indicate Chinese astrology has existed for more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, Chinese astrological methods were considered so powerful that no one except the emperor was allowed to use them. Today, many Asians (not only Chinese) believe in the power of Chinese astrology and consult astrology masters whenever important life decisions are to be made. For example, Chinese astrology is used to assist in determining partner selection, friendship compatibility, timing for investments and when one should just “lay low”.

Accurate determinations require the application of complex methods that are based on the exact time, date and location of your birth. Herein, we touch only the surface of Chinese astrology. To realize its full potential, you will have to consult with a trained Chinese astrologist. Begin understanding this mysterious science by reading through our introduction below.

There are twelve animal signs and the Chinese astrological cycle repeats itself every twelve years. For example, the year 2000 was the Year of the Dragon as will be the year 2012. Each year is ruled by its respective animal sign. During your animal years, you are more likely to have all your capacities working and do well. Signs that  are six years apart are least compatible or downright conflicting. Hence, beware of involvement with those of the sign opposite yours (think of the 12 hour numbers on a clock). Expect years dominated by your opposing sign to be more difficult; for example, the Year of the Dragon is a tough one for all “dogs” of the world.

The information in this section is just for fun and introduction purposes only. If you really want to understand what Chinese astrology has to say about you, then you will have to consult more expert resources. Enjoy.

YIN & YANG

The original Chinese meaning for “Yin” is the “shady side of the hill”. Yin represents darkness, passivity, downward, inward, softness and yielding. “Yang” means the “sunny side of the hill” and represents light, activity, resistance, hardness, outward and upward. In historical texts, Yin is symbolized by woman, water and earth. Yang is symbolized by man, fire and heaven.

Yin and Yang are mutually interdependent, interactive and potentially interchangeable forces. Despite their opposite natures, each contains the seed of the other within it as represented by the black and white dots on the Yin-Yang symbol. The very existence of the world depends on the “dance” and intermingling between these two opposite forces. Given this, Asians do not see a world of black or white but rather a world of black and white swirling together in balance. For a complete world, both black and white exist and are necessary.

With regard to Chinese astrology, the animal signs are either “strong Yin”, “strong Yang” or close to a balance of the two. Animals that are strong in Yin tend to be more introspective and sensitive. Strong Yang animals are outward focused and active. Yin years are good for turning inward, learning and staying close to home. Yang years are better for business, expanding social circles and being active. Even-numbered years are Yang and odd-numbered years are Yin.

  • Strong Yin signs:  Pig, Ox, Rooster
  • Strong Yang signs: Tiger, Dragon, Horse
  • Balance, closer to Yin signs:  Hare, Snake, Goat
  • Balance, closer to Yang signs: Monkey, Dog, Rat

CHINESE ASTROLOGICAL SIGNS

Your character is influenced by three astrological animals. Your “outward animal”, based on your birth year, reflects your outward self. When referring to your Chinese sign, we generally are referring to the animal associated with your birth year. See the table immediately below for your sign based on year. Your birth month determines your “lunar animal” which influences the way you interact on a deeper level in your relationships. Your “inner animal” is determined by the time of day you were born and influences the innermost you. Immediately below, you can determine your sign based on the year you were born. On the “dial” chart below, you can determine your lunar and inner signs. View the chart and then click on your animal to discover more about the real “animal in you”!
